Early Years

Miri has a number of local Early Years providers, known locally as a “Tadika”. These vary considerably in programme, quality and price so parents are advised to visit a number before making a decision.

Tenby International School Miri (“TISM”)

TISM offers an Early Years programme for ages 3 – 5 based on the International Primary Curriculum (“IPC”). Nursery has half-day and full-day options. Primary

TISM offers a Primary programme for ages 6 – 11 based on the International Primary Curriculum (“IPC”), with Literacy and Numeracy based on the English National Curriculum and including Music, Art, Physical Education and Information and Computing Technology. Students also sit the Cambridge International Checkpoint examinations in Year Six.

Languages offered included Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin Chinese, Dutch and French. TISM is authorised by the government of the Netherlands to offer the official Dutch overseas curriculum.

Nederlandse School Miri

At Tenby International School Miri there is also a Dutch school. They offer Dutch lessons according to the NTC-system (Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur) for Primary and in the future also for Secondary school. On the 1st of January 2013 they successfully received the NOB approval for NTC-school. Secondary

TISM offers a Secondary programme for ages 12 – 16 based on the English National Curriculum in Years 7 – 9 and including Music, Art, Physical Education and Information and Computing Technology. Students in Years 10 – 12 prepare for the Cambridge International General Certificate in Secondary Education (“IGCSE”). A post-16 programme is under consideration for introduction in 2015.

Boarding School

Children living in Miri may also attend Jerudong International School in the nearby Sultanate of Brunei’s capital, Bandar for weekly boarding. The school has arranged a bus from Miri, for the 2-hour drive to Bandar. There is a limited amount of spaces available for hostel and for the moment it is advised to reserve beds well in advance. Jerudong expects you to pay a deposit for this. The website for Jerudong School is www.JIS.edu.bn. University

Curtin University Sarawak is the Malaysian branch of Curtin University, Perth, Australia and offers Undergraduate and Graduate Degree programmes, as well as Certificate and Diploma courses. Visit http://www.curtin.edu.my/.

Local (and other) Language Education

Certified instructors give classes in English, Japanese, Chinese Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia. Bahasa Malaysia courses are not reimbursed by SSB except if part of and eligible within the Partner Development Programme. English courses are widely available in Miri.
